CELEBRITY WANNABE 'The Return'
Update 4th December 2008
THE GRAND Final of 'Celebrity Wannabe' packed the Brandon House Hotel to capacity.
As part of this Ross Celtic fundraiser, colourful costumes, wigs, makeup and raw talent took over the Brandon House Hotel on the night.
The event was hosted by Kevin Lyng and Dick Brazil who looked very colourful in their seventies outfits.
The first act up on stage was Elvis in the guise of Cllr. Kevin Dwyer singing 'Suspicious Minds'. Pauline Dunphy and Martina St Ledger were up next as the 'PussyFAT Dolls' and they were followed by Kathy Delaney who gave a fantastic performance as Tina Turner with 'Simply the Best'.
Up next on stage was Dickie O'Neill with the ballad 'Seven Spanish Angels' and the massive hit 'The Shoop Shoop Song' was performed by the Ladies of New Ross Celtic, Carrie McCracken on lead with backing from Rosie Bennett, Denise Malone, Marcella Cullen and Jenny Delaney.
The HeeBee GeeBees were on stage next to treat the audience to 'Stayin Alive', which was performed by Johnny Aylward, Michael Bennett and Tom Kavanagh.
Robbie Bennett, manager of the ladies' team, togged out himself as Tom Jones with the hit 'Delilah'.
Supergroup Abba were represented by Ann Foran, Helen Butler, Jordanna Wall and Sarah Stafford as Abbaette who performed 'Does Your Mother Know', while the penultimate act was provided by Ann St Ledger who performed Madonna's massive hit, 'Like A Virgin'.
The last act on stage arrived on different modes of transport from horses to scooters and even a bulldozer. Celtic People practically brought the house down with the hit from Village People, 'YMCA', with Wayne Russell and Brian Mullet on lead vocals and backing from Tom (Pancho) Dunphy, Davy Rhodes, Dick Butler and Mark Lee.
The competition was tight with the winning act Celtic People with 24 points winning by just half a point from the Celtic Ladies with Kathy receiving 23 marks.
Update 3rd November 2008
The fist heat of New Ross Celtic’s Celebrity Wannabe – The Return, took place in Corcoran’s in front of a packed house. Brendan Connolly, on video, had relayed the show so that the supporters could view the contestants on the many screens there. Judging by the reaction of the crowd, the show was a great success.
Kevin Lyng introduced the Wannabe hopefuls and after their acts offered them to the three judges to be sacrificed. Stoney Burke, Terry Brennan and (last years contestant-turned judge), Sean Connic offered some frank and sometimes very frank opinions of what they had heard and witnessed.
First up was Janet Feeney and Dean Kennedy with ‘The Lion Sleeps tonight’. Janet looked very well and Dean did his best but they will be hard pressed to take this years title.
Next up was Cathy Delaney, as Tina Turner, who rocked the house with a fantastic visual and vocal display of ‘You’re the Best’. Cathy looked very comfortable on stage and is definitely in contention for the title – but she needs your vote!
Dick O’Neill then took the floor to sing ‘ Seven Spanish Angels’ and boy did he give it some welly. He sang this song as if it was his own, He left nothing behind as he sang from the heart! At the end he was modest and said he was only doing it to support New Ross Celtic. That’s the spirit Dicky!
Last to sing in this heat was, ‘Tom Jones’, who looked very like our own Robbie Bennett. Accompanied onto stage by two attractive women, it was the medallion that blinded the audience. After a few false starts, Robbie belted out ‘Delilah’ to a rapturous reception from his many fans. And ‘yes’, the inevitable throwing of underwear did occur! Unfortunately, Stoney thought it was handkerchiefs and blew his nose in one.
A great night was had by all present. If you would like to join in the fun, come and see the second heat in Corcoran’s, on Friday 14th Nov. at 9pm. Acts such as ‘Abba S’, ‘Celtic People’, Fat Pussy Cats’ and others will be there. Don’t forget that each of the contestants need you vote to win ‘ Celebrity Wannabe – The Return’. So vote!
New Ross Celtic wish to acknowledge the support of New Ross Panto for the backdrop, Corcoran’s for the venue, Brendan Connolly for Video and all who participated and helped make it a fun night out.
